Chromosome 21

Starting Point:

Chromosome 21 is the smallest human chromosome. Go to the UCSC browser and ask for a display of the whole chromosome.

Note: To do this, type chr21 into the Browser search window.

Scavenger Hunt Assignment:

• Approximately how many base pairs of DNA are in Chromosome 21?
• One gene that should be visible on the page is called SOD1. Locate SOD1 and describe which part of the chromosome it is found on.
If you can't see it, type SOD1 into the search box and find it directly.
• Click on "SOD1," and describe a genetic disorder associated with this gene.
• Can you name a famous person who died from this disorder?
